Team Tensionr began in August of 2017 under the name Blankity Blank. It all began with Capstone Design at Georgia Tech. A group of 5 mechanical engineers came together to solve the problem of steel banding. This problem was brought to the team in the form of a sponsored project by Skyline Steel, a subsidiary of Nucor Steel.
Once the team was given our problem, we spent the next 4 months brainstorming, designing, and building our first prototype leading up to Capstone Expo. During this time we visited Skyline on multiple occasions to hear more about the problem and put our prototype in the hands of the workers it was designed to protect.
During expo, the team made a last minute decision to fashion the strapping we had been working with for the past 4 months into ties. This unassuming choice became one of the staples of our presentations. After hours of presenting to the attendees of the expo, the team gathered to watch the awards ceremony, with no idea we would win the award for Best Overall Project for the College of Mechanical Engineering
Today, Team Tensionr is motivated to continue our work to protect workers from steel banding. We were also finalists in the 2018 InVenture Prize at Georgia Tech.
